Letterkenny AC Club Notes

May 2010

PRIDE of place this week goes to young Mark English who won a gold medal over 1,000 metres in 2.24.53 at the inaugural European Youth Olympic Trials in Moscow on Sunday. The win guarantees the St Eunan’s College student a place at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this August. This is a remarkable achievement and his family, club and colleagues are all extremely proud of his success.

The action this week was in Buncrana for a 5k run as part of the Grand Prix series on Wednesday night.

More than 220 athletes took part in the Letterkenny A.C. Annual inter-firms road race. The event was again another great success and numbers continue to grow. The team from LYIT comprising of Ian Ward (16.16), Darren McGlinchey (16.49) and Sean McGettigan (16.52) led the students to victory in the team event.

The first man over the line was LAC’s Pauric Brennan in a superb time of 14.54 followed by clubmates Pauric McKinney (2nd-15.34), Brian Thursby Phelam (4th-16.04), Ivan Toner (6th-16.17) and Paul McGlinchey (7th-16.24). LAC’s Maria McCambridge was the first woman to cross the line finishing ninth in a time of 16.31. The evergreen Kevin Toner ran 19.20 and has retained a remarkable record of competing in every inter firms race since its inception over thirty years ago.

There was no lotto jackpot winner last weekend. There were two, match three winners. They were the Gormley family and Johnny Doherty. The jackpot on Saturday night in The Glencar Inn is €1,100.
