Brennan wins North West 10K with PB
May 2010
Letterkenny AC’s Patrick Brennan recorded his first high profile victory in the black and amber vest when breaking the tape to win Sunday’s North West 10K. Finn Valley’s Teresa McGloin was the first senior woman home in 36:30.
Brennan, who transferred from North Sligo at the start of the year, posted a personal best of 32:05 - his previous best for the distance was 32:40 set in Grange - to notch up his first points of the new grand prix season.
Speaking after the race, he was thrilled with the result: “My aim today was to come and win the race and I’m so happy to achieved that. I made a decision to move to Letterkenny in 2010 and things have been going well for me. I ran 1:55 for an 800 metres race during the week and my aim this season is to run under 3:50 for 1500 metres.
"I felt strong at all times today and it was great to have back up from the rest of the team. Hopefully this is the start of a good road season,” the winner added.
Runner-up was former winner and pre-race favourite, Pauric McKinney, in 32:28, with his Letterkenny AC team mate, Kieran Doherty, third in 32:54.
Finn Valley’s senior women dominated their section with Catriona McGranaghan taking second behind Teresa McGloin in 37:52 and the ever-green Kay Bryne third in 39:18.
Looking ahead to the 2010 road season, race director, Brendan McDaid, was hopeful that people would continue competing.
“A lot of people had targeted the North West 10K as their main event. I would appeal to them all to keep up their training and compete in as many of the scheduled races in the grand prix series as possible. There are 32 races in this years series, so there is plenty of choice and variety, with races being held all over the county. Taking part in the grand prix is a great way of keeping in shape, while there is also a great social side to it,” he added.
