SIX ULSTER GOLDS PLUS SILVER AND BRONZE

With the clubs more established stars setting the headlines from sheffield to birmingham. Letterkennys talented younger squad show they have the abilty to write more headlines for themselves as they took the ulster Indoor championship by storm last weekend at Magherafelt.individually six gold, eight silver and eight bronze plus five relay team medals also on the medal rostrum indicated a momentus day, and the national finals in Nenagh (March 27/28) plus (April 10/11) cant come quick enough for this quailty squad.
U/12 GIRLS
Arlene Crossan had quitea busy day and what a prospect she is, gold in 600 metres time trials, her 1.57.2 never was challanged and Arlene showed her multi event ability with another gold in the 60 metres and silver in the long jump(3.57). anchoring the 4x100m relay team Arlene, Edel Smith, Laura McCann and Shauna McFadden took silver medals.
U/12 BOYS
Jordan Ryan (1.53.3) and Michael McGrory (1.55.9) took the plaudits here. Again the 600 metre time trials were dominated by LAC as Ryans silver and McGrorys bronze edged out club mates Mark Irwin (2.01.3)and Sean Curran (2.02.6). Irwins debut at this level was also encouraging as he won his heat but just failed to get in to the medals. Oisin Purdy`s silver medal in the high jump was well deserved having finished 4th in the long jump. Another multi eventer in the making. Curran, Ryan, McGrory and Irwin also took silver in the 4x100m relay.
U/13 GIRLS
With elder brother Ruari setting new horizons in birmingham, Ciara Finnegan displayed all the fighting spirit of this sporting clan with her best ever preformance in the club vest (1.55.7) and a silver medal was a great preformance and she proudly takes her place in the Nenagh Finals. She too led her relay team to silver medals with Sarah Boyce, Niamh Farrell and Arlene Crossan. niamh Farrell finished 4th her 60m just outside the medals.
U/13 BOYS
Now we reach this age group, which has all the hallmarks of progressing to the top in Athletics Ireland in the coming years. Oisin Toal gold in the 600m (1.48.9), silver in the 60m and bronze in the long jump (3.80) had an astounding day at this level. The quality of this squad was underlined by four LAC boys taking their place in the 60 metres final with Darragh Toal taking gold, Oisin Toal taking silver and Shane Irwin bronze with Lochlan Purdy just edged into 4th place. Gold also in the 4x200m relay with Ciarin Kelly, Darragh Toal, Oisin Toal, Lochlan Purdy makes the Nenagh finals a medal prospect for these boys. Ethan McCrossan joins Oisin Toal in nenagh with bronze in the 600m, again just nudging out clubmate and twin brother Stefan who`s (1.57.4)again underlines these boys qulaities. Jack Patton 2.04.6 was also encouraging.
In the older juviniles Lisa Shiels (U19) took the 60 metres title and with silver in the 200 metres showing she still remains ulsters top sprinter.
Catherine Boyle (U18) silver in the 300 metres and bronze in the 200 metres with Monica O`Connor (U18) silver in the 800 metres and bronze in the 300 metres. Emily Grennan (U18) bronze in te 1500 metres kept the flag flying for these girls who also took silver in the 4x200metre relay.
Adam Friel (U19) gold in the 1500m and Gearoid McGeehan bronze in the u17 1500 metres ended the Day on a very high note for this Letterkenny squad. Now solid and focussed training is required over the next three weeks as national medals are at a premuim.
