All-Ireland Success For Letterkenny Athletes.
June 2009
The All Ireland Junior and U23 championships were held in glorious sunshine in Tullamore on Sunday last. Letterkenny athletic club athletes had a very successful weekend coming away with a Gold and two silvers in the 800 metre events.
Both Mark English and Darren Mc Brearty came through their heats earlier in the day to line up together in the U20 Final. After a tactical first lap Darren hit the front with 300mts to go. His blistering pace killed of the rest of the field and Mark English came through brilliantly in the last 100mts to pick up the silver medal. Both of these athletes came through a busy week. Darren ran at the Irish Milers club meeting in Irishtown, Dublin on Wednesday night and ran a time of 1.51.7 0.2 Seconds outside the European Junior standard. This is also a new Donegal 800mts record surpassing Gary Murrays previous best of 1.51.8 set in 2002.
Mark English also win the Tailteann games 800mts on Saturday gaining selection for the International schools in August.
In the U23 800mts final Danny Mooney ran very intelligently to win the silver medal and crossing the line ahead of some very reputable athletes.
