Letterkenny AC's Darren McBrearty set a new Donegal best in the 800m at the National Track and Field Championship’s in Santry at the weekend. McBrearty finished in second place in a time of 1:49.37, which is a fine preparation for the teenager who travelled to Moncton in Canada on Tuesday for the World Junior Athletics Championships.

“It was a nice confidence boost to get ahead of the world championships - a new PB, a Donegal record and my first senior medal," said McBrearty.

“While I qualified for both the 800m and 1,500m in Canada I'm going to concentrate on the 1,500m,” he added.

Maria Mc Cambridge, also of Letterkenny AC, was an impressive winner of the 5k in a time 16:19.78secs. The former Olympian went to the front after 2 kilometres and was never troubled. Milford's Brendan Boyce took bronze in the 10k walk with a 42:54.66. The Letterkenny AC athlete was beaten by Olympians Rob Heffernan and Jamie Costin.
