Preparations underway for Danny McDaid 15K

Preparations are well underway for this year’s Danny McDaid 15K Road race which takes place on Sunday, August 9th, at 11 am.

First run in 2005, this popular round of the Donegal Athletics Board Grand Prix will once again by sponsored by David Crumlish Appliance Repairs and Sales.

The race was the brainchild of Letterkenny AC’s Brendan McDaid, as Letterkenny AC Chairman, Ciaran O’Donnell, explains.

“A few years ago, Brendan realised that there was an opening in the fixture calendar for a longer distance race ahead of the national half marathon which takes place this year at the start of September and the Dublin City Marathon which is a regular fixture on the Bank Holiday Monday at the end of October,” he comments.

“It’s great to have a race named after our double Olympian and great ambassador, Danny McDaid and it’s fitting that the race will finish on the Danny McDaid Track at the Aura Leisure Centre,” he adds. “Crumlish Appliance Repairs and Sales have been with us from the first Danny McDaid 15K and the club is extremely grateful that David Crumlish has come on board again this year. Having a local sponsor of the calibre of Crumlish Appliance is vital and the role of the sponsor is even more important in the current economic climate.”

Further details of this year’s Danny McDaid 15K will be announced at a press briefing on Monday, July 27th.

It is still unclear if last year’s winner, Ciaran Doherty, will be in the country to defend his title which he won on a time of 49:54, from his Letterkenny AC team mates, Pauric McKinney (50:30) and Johnathon Patton (53:08).

Winner of the women’s section, Maria McCambridge, who has since joined the Letterkenny club, may well use the race as part of her build up to the World Marathon Championship in which she will compete at the end of August in Berlin.
