February 2010

Congratulations to Mark English who won a bronze medal in the final of the 800 metres at the national indoor championships at the Odyssey. The club made history on Sunday when three runners - Mark English, Darren McBrearty and Dan Mooney - lined up for the 800 metre final.

Mark showed maturity way beyond his 16 years and battled bravely in the home straight to take third in a time of 1:53:86 behind winner, James McIlroy from Ballymena and David McCarthy of Le Cheile who claimed the silver medal. Darren McBrearty was just outside the medals when finishing fourth in 1:53:91, while Dan Mooney ran a credible 1:55:91.

15 year old Ruairi Finnegan also enjoyed a fruitful weekend when he won the 800 metre juvenile final. New recruit, Brendan Boyce placed fourth in the 5K walk and took almost a minute off his previous best when posting 20:18. The performances of the Letterkenny athletes in Belfast has given the entire club a timely boost and is proof that the work they've put in over the years and the guidance they receive from their coaches is paying dividends. Sunday was one of the finest hours the club has enjoyed in recent times. Hopefully there will be more days like this.

On Friday night, Michael Black was the club's lead runner in the first of a 5K road race series organised by Finn Valley when placing second in 16:35. The race was won in 16:29 by Kevin Holian, with Frank Chaney taking third in 16:43. Other top ten finishers from the club included Ivan Toner (4th in 16:46) and Martin Gormley (9th in 17:49).

There was no winner of the club's weekly jackpot drawn in the Glencar Inn on Saturday night. The numbers drawn were 4, 13, 15 and 19. The four match two winners were Kyle McGettigan, Packie McGinley, Gorretti Timoney and Teresa Orr. This weekend's jackpot will be 1,580 euro.
