Best wishes to Christopher Johnston who leads up the under-23 Irish team in the European cross country championships in Budapest, Hungary this weekend. Christopher will be joined on the trip by club coach, Teresa McDaid, who is team manager for the high profile event.
Our most recent Olympian, Brendan Boyce, was named Ulster Senior Athlete of the Year at a function in Monaghan on Friday night. This was in recognition of his impressive display in the 50K walk in the London Olympics which saw him post a new personal best time of 3:55:01. Two of the club’s track specialists, Mark English and Ruairi Finnegan, were also recognised at the ceremony when being presented with special achievement awards.
The club held its most successful turkey trot ever on Sunday morning last, with 207 runners taking part. The race, held in association with United Healthcare, was won by Letterkenny AC’s Danny Mooney in 15:55, with his club mates, Ivan Toner second (16:25) and Ciaran McBride third (16:30). Letterkenny AC’s Fionnuala Diver was the first woman home in a time of 17:55 The six runners who predicted their time exactly were Ivan Toner, Martin Gormley, Zak McGowan, Padraig Friel, James Maguire and Sean McAuliffe. The seven who ran within one second of their predicted time were Darragh Crossan, John Daly, Paul McMonagle, Gabriel McMonagle, Adrian Callaghan, Gavin Harris and Raymond Birch. Of the 208 finishers, 42 of them were within ten seconds of their predicted times.
Letterkenny Athletic Club will stage a top class meeting on Saturday, May 18th 2013 to mark the official opening of the Danny McDaid Athletics Track at the Aura Leisure Complex. The international event, which will attract the highest calibre of athletes, will see the first ever sub-four minute mile posted in Donegal. The event will be officially launched in the Station House Hotel, Letterkenny on Tuesday, 11th December 2012 at 8.00 p.m. and all members are asked to come along and show their support for the event. The club will also hold a function on the night of the Danny McDaid Athletics Track opening in May to celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary.
