With the bulk of the Grand Prix events now over and  many Letterkenny AC runners on holiday, there were fewer club runners than normal in competitive action over the past week. Gwyn Yemm was the 1st LAC runner home in an excellent time of 18.54, in the St Mary’s GAA 5K in Convoy on Tuesday night. Finn Valley’s Dermot McElchar was the race winner in 16.32. All at Letterkenny Athletic Club would like to wish every future happiness to club members Jane McGinley and Ivan Toner, who were married last Thursday. Barry Mackey travelled to the northern Donegal town of Clonmany last Wednesday.  Frequent racer Barry clocked 20.13 for the 5K. The race was won by Foyle Valley AC’s Scott Rankin. Club athletes acknowledged the planned rest and respite of club Statsman Hugh Gallagher allowing him a well -deserved break this week from the weekly roundup by being selective in their exploits. John Hughes ran the Russel Gaelic Union 10K in Downpatrick  in 41.38 during the week on a flying visit to his native homeland. Runners in last Tuesday’s Burtonport 5K were faced with temperatures touching 30 degrees. However,there were still a lot of quality performances and, as in many of the Grand Prix events this summer, Letterkenny AC runners were well represented when the prizes were being handed out. Almost 300 runners took part in Wednesday night’s Lifford Strabane AC 5K. The race was won by Foyle Valley’s Chris McGuinness in 15.36. Gynn Yemm was the 1st Letterkenny AC runner, in a time of  19.01. In-form Noeleen Scanlan ran 19.02 to record her 2nd PB in a week and was the 2nd Senior Woman. Kieran Crawford continued his recent good form with a 5th place finish and a time of 17.37 in Tuesday evening’s Raphoe 5K. Richard Raymond returned to winning ways in the M60 category in 22.16. Mairead Pinder finished in 28.09. The race was won by City of Derry Spartans’ Emmett McGinty in 16.15. In Irish Athletics last Saturday, it was a case of ‘all roads lead to Letterkenny’. Letterkenny Athletics  Club organised a feast of International athletics, which was a resounding success. The details of the events have been covered seperately but, undoubtedly, the highlight was the final race, the Sub 4 Minute Mile International Challenge. The sub 4 minute  goal was, indeed, achieved. Since its inception in 2012, the Glenswilly 5K has been one of the best supported of the Grand Prix events. Last Tuesday’s race was no exception, with 526 runners taking part. Race winner was Danny Mooney, a man who is enjoying an exceptional summer. He crossed the line in 15.44. One of Donegal’s most consistent runners, Ivan Toner, was just 1 second behind.
