Letterkenny Athletic Club’s women’s highly successful cross country season continued in Sunday’s Donegal Senior Championship. The Finn Valley Centre course was a stamina sapping mudbath but the unseasonally mild, dry weather meant that runners enjoyed pleasant overhead conditions. Catriona Jennings certainly didn’t allow herself to be  derailed by the mud and gave spectators a masterful exhibition of front running. Letterkenny Athletic Club had a highly successful Ulster Novice cross country on Sunday afternoon at the Finn Valley Centre. Although the rain had temporarily stopped, the deep mud was a real stamina tester. However, the conscientious training done by LAC athletes meant that the club’s runners were up to the task. In ideal running conditions, 16,825 runners lined up for Sunday’s Dublin City Marathon. The event, after being run for 36 consecutive years on October Bank Holiday Monday, was this year moved to Sunday. This had a positive effect, with 5700 international runners taking part. The Dublin Marathon is now the 4th largest Marathon in Europe. Letterkenny Athletic Club had runners at the weekend in race venues as diverse as Coney Island in Sligo and the roads of Amsterdam. The 2016-17 cross country season entered its 3rd weekend, with Donegal runners  having competed in Ballybofey  and Trialougha on the previous 2 weekends. Letterkenny Athletic Club’s 4 man relay team put on an excellent performance in Saturday’s Northern Ireland and Ulster Road Relay Championship, which was held in Victoria Park, Belfast. The club achieved a highly creditable 3rd place finish. The winning team was Derry Track Club, who were just 81 seconds ahead of LAC. 2nd team, North Belfast Harriers, were 34 seconds ahead. With the Grand Prix now over and the cross country season not starting until October, this weekend provided a lull in competitive action for most Letterkenny AC runners. Barry Mackey produced another excellent performance in Tuesday night’s Loreto 5K in Letterkenny. Barry’s time of 19.36 gave him 4th place overall and first place in the M50 category. He was followed by retiring club chairman, Michael Galvin, who clocked 20.05. Michael was 2nd in the M40 category. The race winner was Dale Corbett in 18.11. On Friday night, Pauric Breslin travelled to Killybegs and had another victory. He ran 16.28 in the Niall Mor National School 5K to come home almost 2 minutes ahead of 2nd placed runner, David Conwell. On Saturday, Marie Boyle showed clearly that her Dublin Marathon training is paying off when she achieved a PB after running 1.33.54 in the Athlone half marathon. The McGranaghan’s had a very successful evening on Tuesday in the Abbey Village 5K in Kilmacrennan. Gerard’s time of 18.03 gave him 2nd place, just 6 seconds behind Limerick AC’s visiting athlete, John McCallion. Monica’s fine form continued and she took the senior women’s prize in a time of 19.15.
