Letterkenny AC - Club Notes

August 2009

THIS Sunday all the attention on the LAC front is focussed on the 5th annual Danny McDaid 15k. The race-fun run begins a 11-15a.m from Hegarty’s old garage in Ballymacool and finishes after a loop of Rashedogue at the Danny McDaid track in the Aura Leisure Centre.

Our thanks again to our sponsor, David Crumlish of Crumlish Appliances and Repairs, Thorn Road, Letterkenny for his continued support. We had 97 athletes for this prestigious event last year and we’re hoping to exceed that this Sunday.

The race will be well contested with Kieran Doherty, Ciaran Carlin, Pauric McKinney, Gary Crossan and Ivan Toner all in the mix. Doherty won the race last year and on his current form will take some beating.

As well as the elite race there are category prizes across all age groups and we’re hoping people will also come out and jog or walk around the course. The race is run in honour of our double Olym pian, Danny McDaid who may tackle the course himself after a recent 5k outing in Burtonport.

Well done to a number of our elite athletes on their fantastic performances last weekend. In Santry at the National Track and Field Championship’s young Darren McBrearty finished fourth in the 800 metres while Kieran Doherty was fourth in the steeplechase and Pauric McKinney fifth in the 10k in a time of 31.55.

Congratulations to Mark English who won the 800 metres at the Celtic games in Scotland at the weekend. This was another super display from a very talented young athlete. The club is very proud of Mark and Darren McBrearty who are well on their way to international honours.

Having chalked up a number of second and third place finishes over the grand prix season, Letterkenny AC's Ivan Toner secured a thoroughly deserved win on Monday night when winning the Killybegs 5K.

His time of 16:50 left him a comfortable winner, with Tir Chonaill AC's Paul Ward taking second in 17:19 and Pauric O'Donnell of Letterkenny finishing third in 17:23.

Helena Crossan of Inishowen AC maintained her winning form when taking the senior women's title - her time of 20:12 placed her 15th overall in a field of 49.

In the club lotto at the weekend in The Glencar Inn the numbers drawn were; 5,11,12 and 13. There was one match three winner-Mary Kinsella. The jackpot this weekend this weekend is €1,310.
